Frequently Asked Questions

What is golden hour and why does it matter for camping?

Golden hour is the period shortly after sunrise and before sunset when light is warm and soft. For campers, it's also a critical time marker — you should have camp set up at least 30 minutes before sunset for safety.

How accurate is this calculator?

Times are approximate (Âą5 minutes) using simplified solar equations. For precise navigation, use a GPS device. The calculator does not account for terrain, elevation, or local timezone anomalies.

Why do daylight hours change throughout the year?

Daylight varies because Earth's axis is tilted 23.5° relative to its orbit around the sun. In summer, your hemisphere tilts toward the sun for longer days; in winter, it tilts away. The effect is extreme at high latitudes — above the Arctic Circle, you get midnight sun in summer and polar night in winter.
