Ground insulation is essential because compressed sleeping-bag insulation beneath the body provides less protection. Use a pad system with a tested R-value appropriate to the expected ground conditions and manufacturer guidance. Test layered pads for coverage and stability before relying on them.

Manage Moisture Before It Becomes a Cold Problem
Sweating during activity can leave clothing dangerously cold when movement stops. Start slightly cool, adjust layers early, and protect dry insulation from snow and condensation.
Use a moisture-managing base layer, adjustable insulation, and weather protection suited to the conditions. Carry dry sleep clothing and spare hand protection. Avoid making universal claims about one fabric or system; the correct choice depends on moisture, activity, temperature, and the ability to dry gear.
Ventilate the shelter according to its design. Ventilation can reduce condensation but does not eliminate it in every condition.
Plan Water and Stove Use Together
Cold weather can freeze bottles, hoses, and some used filters. Follow manufacturer instructions and carry a backup. Snow melting requires time and fuel, and melting snow does not automatically make it safe from every contamination risk.
Ordinary fuel-burning stoves must remain outside sleeping spaces with adequate airflow. Never use a stove, grill, charcoal, or fuel lantern inside a tent or vehicle for warmth. Build a meal and water plan that does not require unsafe cooking shortcuts during severe weather.

Hypothermia can be aggravated by wind and wet clothing. Warning signs may include uncontrollable shivering, reduced coordination, confusion, and incoherent speech. Move the person toward reliable shelter and seek emergency medical help.
Frostbite is also a serious cold injury. Protect exposed skin, monitor the group, and seek medical guidance for suspected frostbite. Do not depend on improvised internet instructions for treatment in a remote setting.
The safest response is prevention and early action. If a person cannot warm up, critical gear is wet, or coordination and thinking are worsening, leave or call for help.
Do Not Generalize Ice or Avalanche Safety
Ice conditions vary with temperature, currents, springs, snow cover, cracks, and local changes. A single thickness number is not a universal guarantee of safety. Follow local authority guidance and avoid traveling onto ice when conditions or expertise are uncertain.
Avalanche terrain requires specialized education, current forecasts, route selection, rescue equipment, and practiced partners. Carrying a beacon, probe, and shovel without training is not enough. A beginner winter camp should avoid avalanche terrain entirely.

- Choose a developed or permitted site close to a vehicle or reliable building.
